Competition in the German mail market is set to get much tougher for Deutsche Post with this news that three of Germany’s largest publishers of newspapers are establishing a nationwide network which will come into full operation when the market is liberalized in 2008. Although liberalization will impact on all European post offices, DPWN has followed the most aggressive diversification strategy. Dutch postal operator TNT has come closest to building the same level of operations across the various mail, express and logistics sectors whilst French La Poste and UK Royal Mail have restricted their acquisitions to European parcels and express companies. Greater competition in the European postal market has been one of the driving forces for the transformation of the global logistics industry. It was this threat that led Deutsche Post World Net to push into foreign markets and into the neighbouring express and logistics sectors. The culmination of this strategy is likely to be the acquisition of UK based contract logistics provider Exel. (Source: Axel Springer)
