Northline Freight Management is a national freight forwarding and warehousing company with 10 in-house managed depots around the country, supplemented by a number of agencies. The $100 million-a-year operation, which employs more than 350 people, provides freight services as well as ambient and temperature-controlled warehousing throughout mainland Australia.Northline raised eyebrows in February this year after it returned most of its Northern Territory freight to road after a 12-month trial of the rail line from Adelaide to Darwin.Northline Freight Management Chief Operating Officer Phillip Taylor says the company is establishing a national network of state-of-the-art warehouses to complement its national transport network."Melbourne is the first stage in a $60 million program to establish a national network of integrated distribution centres," he says."Northline's network will provide small to medium-size companies with access to the latest warehousing and freight management processes previously reserved for the big end of town. It will further cement our reputation as an attractive alternative to impersonal multinational rivals."Northline's new $16 million facility in the northern Melbourne suburb of Sunshine is a purpose-built 23,000 square metre complex that currently employs 70 people and handles more than 90 linehaul movements a week. This freight volume can double as demand for the facility increases.
